Our Governors The Role of the Governors The Governing Body is responsible for maintaining and improving the standard of achievement of pupils and for the conduct of the academy. As a Church of England Academy the Governing Body ensures that the ethos of the academy reflects Christian values, and that this is reflected in all policies and procedures. We liaise closely with our local church, St James the Great, Manston, to help the academy achieve this What do the Governors do? The key functions of the Governing Body are to: Support and Challenge: Governors ensure accountability, ask the difficult questions and use their skills and experience to support the academy in achieving its aims and recognising good performance. Provide Strategic Management: Governors lead by setting the vision and ethos of the academy, its aims, objectives and policies, and monitor and evaluate the progress the academy is making towards achievement of those aims and objectives. Make Executive Decisions: Governors have key strategic responsibilities in areas such as the academy finances and balance of resources, the appointment of staff and performance management, the curriculum, admissions procedures and Health & Safety including Safeguarding. In order to do this well, the Governors work closely with the academy’s Senior Leadership Team, but the role is never about operational management – at all times it is the Principal who is responsible for the day-to-day management and control of the academy and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.
